Secure and Protect: A Guide to Tarping Loads on Flatbed Trailers

Ivan Tuesday, April 25, 2023

Transporting goods on a flatbed trailer is an efficient and cost-effective way to move large or bulky loads across the country. However, ensuring that these loads are secured and protected during transport is crucial to maintaining safety on the road and avoiding damage to the cargo. Tarping is an essential step in securing loads on a flatbed trailer, and in this article, we’ll discuss the steps involved in tarping a load properly.

  1.  Choose the Right Tarp Selecting the right tarp is the first step in securing a load on a flatbed trailer. There are a variety of tarps available, and each is designed for specific types of loads. Make sure to choose a tarp that is large enough to cover the entire load and strong enough to withstand wind, rain, and debris during transport.
  2. Prepare the Load Before placing the tarp over the load, make sure that the cargo is properly arranged and secured. This means ensuring that all items are stacked evenly and secured with straps, chains, or other binding materials. If the load is not secured properly, it may shift during transport, which could cause damage to both the load and the trailer.
  3. Place the Tarp Once the load is properly arranged, it’s time to place the tarp over the load. Start by unrolling the tarp and placing it over the front of the load. Then, work your way towards the back of the trailer, unrolling the tarp as you go. Be sure to position the tarp so that it covers the entire load and extends over the sides of the trailer.
  4. Secure the Tarp Once the tarp is in place, it’s time to secure it to the trailer. Begin by fastening the front of the tarp to the trailer using bungee cords or rope. Then, work your way towards the back of the trailer, securing the tarp to the sides of the trailer with bungee cords or ratchet straps. Make sure to pull the tarp taut as you secure it to the trailer, to prevent it from flapping in the wind.
  5. Inspect the Tarp Finally, take a few minutes to inspect the tarp and ensure that it is securely fastened to the trailer. Look for any areas where the tarp may be loose or flapping in the wind, and make any necessary adjustments. Remember, a secure tarp is essential to maintaining safety on the road and protecting the cargo from damage.
In conclusion, tarping a load on a flatbed trailer is an essential step in ensuring the safe and secure transport of goods. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your load is properly secured and protected during transport, reducing the risk of damage to the cargo and the trailer. Always remember to choose the right tarp, properly prepare the load, and securely fasten the tarp to the trailer before hitting the road.
